How it all began...
The ministry of Towerview Baptist Church dates back to 1916 when the Landsdowne Baptist Church of East St. Louis established a mission on 49th Street in the Rosemont Missionary Baptist Church, with 58 charter members.
Many people accepted Jesus as their Savior in the young church, and by 1938 the membership had grown to 634. Our growth continued, reaching a membership of 1,257 in 1964. The late 1960's and 1970's saw a decline in membership; however, the church continued to win people to Christ and maintain a strong ministry.
The 1980's were a period of great change to us. In 1981, we purchased five acres of ground at our present location in Belleville, and established the Towerview Baptist Chapel. In 1982, we voted to move to the Lebanon Avenue site. 1983 brought many new developments:
- We sold our beautiful facility on 49th Street,
- We became Towerview Baptist Church,
- We began meeting at Whiteside School,
- We began Phase I of our building,
- In October, 1984, we moved into our new auditorium.
In 1987 and 1992, we saw the completion of Phase II and Phase III. The Lord has blessed us with a beautiful facility. Let us use it to bring glory and honor to Him.
The most exciting chapter of our history is the one that is yet to be written. We look forward to seeing many individuals commit their lives to Christ and grow in His service.
